It’s typical of A. Lange & Söhne that the view through the caseback is far more showy than what you see on the front. The slim case and narrow bezel highlight the wide open space of the mother-of-pearl dial, where everything is reduced to the minimum. Turn it over and you see the engraved balance cock, the gold chatons, and the prestige finish. The brand is discretion translated into watchmaking.
Case and dial
At 35 mm and just 7.3 mm thick, the watch is feminine in size, and its identity as a woman’s watch is reinforced by the mother-of-pearl dial and white leather strap. But these days of gender mixing and globally diverse tastes, the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia 35 mm is simply a watch ideal for small wrists. The case is in white or pink gold, with brushed finish on the caseband contrasting with the rest of the surfaces that are high polish. Both watches have an alligator leather strap with pin buckle. The dial is in solid silver faced with a thin layer of mother-of-pearl, a technique that makes it iridescent and almost luminous in its reflections.
The A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia 35 mm is powered by the Lange calibre L941.1, made in-house and hand-wound. It has been made since 1995. It has 164 components, 21 jewels and 4 screwed gold chatons. The balance runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hertz) and the watch has a power reserve of 45 hours. The movement provides the stop-seconds function, so that the subsidiary seconds hands stops moving when you are setting the time.
The L941.1 has all the features that are characteristic of a Lange movement, the screw balance, the swan-neck beat adjustment, engraved balance cock, the three-quarter plate with Glashütte stripes, and the constellation of gold chatons, rubies and blued screws. Lange owners say that the winding experience is excellent and a daily pleasure.
