In the second edition of the Green Product Award, one of the Professional awards went to NOMOS Glashütte with their “sustainable watch” Metro. While the watch doesn’t seem any greener than other mechanical watches, in actual fact there is something eco-friendly here, because nearly 95% of production is conducted within the company rather than outsourced, meaning shorter sypply chains and local employment. There is no doubt that the design is beautiful, and incorporates an in-house movement, the hand-wound calibre DUW 4401 which incorporates the new NOMOS “swing system”, a new in-house escapement.

The case is in stainless steel, 37 mm in diameter and slim at 7.65 mm thickness. On the dial, date at 6 o’clock, and power reserve indicator above the central pivot. It has the minimalist design characteristic of Nomos, and the movement looks good through the sapphire caseback. The watch costs €2,680, and it is available online at www.nomos-store.com
