The B-Type pilot’s watch is good for people who like the pilot’s watch appearance but who want a bit extra on the dial in comparison with the super-rationalist Type A. Steinhart‘s version of this historical precedent is a good reinterpretation of the 1930s originals, at a very accessible price. It is made using an ETA movement, something that will change in 2020 when ETA’s owner Swatch Group implements its decision to sell ETA movements only to Swatch Group watchmaking companies.
Case and dial
The watch has a 44 mm diameter case in brushed stainless steel, with a solid stainless steel caseback. The total thickness is 14.2 mm. The dial features the inner hour ring in addition to the outer minutes scale, with the blued hands well coordinated with the respective scales. The crown is available either in conical or onion format. The strap is in leather with the characteristic double studs, another historic feature, and a steel pin buckle. As in many of Steinhart’s pilot’s watches, water resistance is specified as “limited, no swimming or shower:” this is simply the literal interpretation of the normal 3 Atm/30 metre water resistance of most watches, which are suitable for everyday use and therefore stand up to splashes and rain, but which are not suitable for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkelling, diving etc.
The Superluminova is placed on the hands in such a way as to leave a narrow blue outline, though this is a detail that can only be seen on close examination.
The watch is powered by the Swiss-made ETA 2824-2 automatic movement, in its Elaboré grade (second grade out of a total of four). It provides a power reserve of 38-40 hours, and it has the stop-seconds feature, so that the seconds hand stops when you pull out the crown to set the time,
