Sinn trace their inspiration for this watch to naval deck watches or B-Uhr watches. This pattern is more familiar as B-Uhr pilot’s watches , in this case the type B pilot’s watch with separate scales for minute and hour hands. The Sinn 856 B-Uhr has beige SuperLuminova on minute hand, hour indices and the triangle at 12 o’clock, and white SuperLuminova on the hour and second hands. It has a date window, sloping and positioned at 4 o’clock. Luckily it’s small enough as to almost be unnoticeable.
The case is made of bead-blasted stainless steel, with bezel and case middle hardened using Sinn’s “Tegiment” process that increases scratch resistance. The caseback is solid, in nickel-free steel. It’s a very wearable piece at 40 mm diameter and 11 mm thickness, with a range of strap options including a strap that threads onto a wider band in the same material. Very trendy at the present time, though perhaps it would have been even trendier if it had been in black leather.
The watch has Sinn’s technical features: air-dehumidifying technology that reduces the risk of fogging; magnetic field protection to 80,000 A/m (about 1,000 gauss); water resistance rated at 20 bar (200 metres), in part by virtue of the screw-down crown; and resistance to low pressure. Its movement is a self-winding Sellita calibre, the SW300-1, with a balance running at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hertz). It has the stop-seconds function, which helps set the time to the nearest second.
