The Lunova Datum by Mühle-Glashütte is part of the new Lunova family introduced in 2017, hallmarked by cases that have a larger proportion of polished surfaces than is usual for the brand, and a graded dial. The result is a watch that is both sporty and classical, equally at home on a boat or in the boardroom, slim enough to slide under a shirt cuff. The watch has a water resistance of 100 metres which makes it tough enough to stand up to surface swimming or any accidental encounters with water. It’s an interesting combination of the pilot’s watch aesthetic with a more formal timepiece.
Case and dial
The Lunova Datum has a case in polished stainless steel, 42.3 mm in diameter and 10.7 mm thick. The sapphire watchglass has an effective double anti-glare treatment which enhances legibility in all lighting conditions. The caseback has a sapphire crystal window revealing the movement. The crown is screw-down, contributing to the 100-metre water resistance. The strap is in crocodile leather, with a stainless steel buckle. On the graded black dial, the applied indices ensure easy legibility, with SuperLuminova on hands and hour markers. The dusky orange markers and seconds-hand tip add a touch of colour that coordinates with the brown leather strap. The date numeral at 3 o’clock is a little larger than usual and nicely incorporated into the overall design.
Movement
The Lunova Datum is powered by the self-winding Sellita SW 400-1 movement, modified with Mühle-Glashütte’s patented woodpecker neck regulation, its own branded oscillating weight, and elaborate surface finish including blued screws. The watch provides the stop-seconds function, fast date adjustment from the crown, and a 38-hour power reserve.
