Gruppo Ardito Watches is an Italian artisanal watchmaking workshop born from the passion of four partners whose previous professional experience ranges from precision mechanical engineering to design and watchmaking micro-mechanics. To find out more, we spoke to the engineer Fabio Chiappino, one of the partners at this small Piedmont company, based in Alessandria.

Gruppo Ardito Watches. The name inevitably reminds us of historical episodes…

The name is based on the memory of the ARDITI and, more in general, of the assault and attack division of the Italian Army, Navy and Air Force who, with their enterprise, valour, patriotism, sense of duty and spirit of sacrifice right through to the very end, helped write many unforgettable pages of history during the two World Wars.

So we could say that your focus is on “Italian pride” along with the corporate mission of creating tough, reliable timepieces with carefully-designed mechanical characteristics?

Exactly.

Your watches have a striking and original appearance that suggests impressive strength…

Timepieces by Gruppo Ardito Watches are professional diving and military instruments designed and built to offer excellent durability even in the most extreme conditions of use.

Are your G.A.W. models designed and made in Italy?

The new product concepts and prototypes are designed, developed and crafted by ourselves directly at the company, while all components, with the exception of the movements that are Swiss, are made in Italy by expert artisans, under our constant control and supervision.

For those who did not previously know your brand, could you describe the G.A.W. models that have been made up until today?

In 2016 we presented our first model, NumeroZero (case in AISI 316L steel or in grade 5 titanium, 54.6 mm x 19.5 mm, sandwich dial, automatic GAW001 movement based on the ETA 2824/2, strap in high-tech rubber). At present, production of NumeroZero has been put on stand-by in order to concentrate on new references.

NumeroUno is the second G.A.W. model (bronze case, 46 mm x 16.5 mm, sandwich dial, 4-mm sapphire watchglass with anti-reflective coating, Swiss Made GAW001 automatic calibre, waterproof to 100 bar and beyond (tested to above 200 bar), strap in leather or canvas).

Kraken, our third model, has a “space” look with suggestions of the 1970s and its very technical characteristics. In fact it is our most extreme model: the case is in grade 5 titanium, 46 mm x 18.5 mm, with a sandwich dial, and a sapphire watchglass with anti-reflective curvature and dome curvature reaching 8.5 mm thickness. It has a Swiss-made GAW001 automatic movement, it weighs 150 grams, with a sharkskin or high-tech rubber strap, and it is waterproof to a pressure of above 950 bar (the test was voluntarily limited to that value).

The Dandy model (2018) on the other hand is our interpretation of the ideal compromise between performance and looks (case in grade 5 titanium, 44 mm x 12.5 mm, Swiss Made GAW001 movement, blue soleil dial, sapphire watchglass with dome curvature 3.5 mm in thickness, waterproof to above 100 bar (voluntarily limited testing), racing strap in Saffiano leather.

2020/21 is the year of the Lince model (the name means “Lynx”). In comparison to our preceding G.A.W. watches, Lince has a more compact case (42 mm x 12 mm). In fact, it can also be worn by women who like to dare to wear watches with case diameter greater than is usual for feminine timepieces. The case is in grade 5 titanium which offers lightness and strength. It is made in three parts machined from solid titanium, and it is assembled using 10 hex screws (5 on the caseback and 5 on the fixed bezel). The dial is blue or black, protected by a sapphire watchglass with anti-reflective coating, and it has a hand-finished degradé effect with sword hands and indices filled with SuperLumiNova.

The screw-down crown is in grade 5 titanium, and it is personalized. The watchglass’ water resistance is assured by an O-ring at the base of the glass and an L-section ring in contact with the edge of the glass, holding the latter to the case. These technical features contribute to the watch’s waterproof performance exceeding the pressure of 100 bar (voluntarily limited testing). It weighs 85 grams and it is powered by the Swiss-Made Sellita SW200 automatic movement (28,800 oscillations per hour, functions comprising hours, minutes, seconds, date, 41 hours power reserve). The caseback is engraved with reference and serial number, and it is in grade 5 titanium with sandblasted finish. Lince, presented in a hand-crafted wooden presentation box, has a natural rubber strap with steel buckle. I would like to take this opportunity to mention that after 15 August we will present Lince in a new “turquoise” version.

You will be exhibiting, for the second time, at the second edition of W.O.I. – Watches Of Italy, the Italian trade fair and mart dedicated to Italian watchmaking, to be held on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September at the “Orsi” Museum of Agricultural Machinery in Tortona, Italy (admission free, from 10 am to 7 pm). Which new products will visitors be able to see?

For the next W.O.I. show, we will present the latest model in our collection: Esploratore (39 mm x 12.8 mm). This will have a case initially in Cusn12 bronze and a caseback in grade 5 titanium. It will house the GMT ETA 2893/2 movement, a first for a G.A.W. watch. With this model we would like to introduce our watchmaking approach to those who like technical watches but prefer smaller case sizes. Its technical characteristics and quality remain unchanged, with guaranteed performance at the same levels of our other models. This is a new design well worth discovering. Of course, this piece will be, like the others, strictly Made in Italy.

Gruppo Ardito Watches è un laboratorio artigianale italiano nato dalla passione di quattro soci con al loro attivo esperienze lavorative che spaziano dall’ingegneria meccanica di precisione, al design ed alla micromeccanica applicata all’orologeria. Gruppo Ardito Watches. Un nome che, inevitabilmente, riporta alla mente la storia passata…

S’ispira al ricordo degli ARDITI e, più in generale, ai reparti di Assaltatori e di Incursori Italiani, dell’Esercito, della Marina e dell’Aeronautica che con la loro forza, il loro valore, il loro patriottismo, il loro senso del dovere e il loro spirito di sacrificio spinto all’estremo hanno contribuito a scrivere indimenticabili pagine di storia durante i due conflitti mondiali.

Quindi potremmo dire che il vostro focus è l’“orgoglio italiano” unito alla “promessa aziendale” di proporre orologi robusti ed affidabili dalla rigorosa meccanica costruttiva?

Esattamente.

I vostri segnatempo sfoggiano un’estetica originale ed “importante”…

Gli orologi Gruppo Ardito Watches sono orologi professionali di tipo subacqueo/militare pensati e costruiti per resistere nel tempo all’uso più estremo.

I vostri modelli G.A.W sono pensati e prodotti in Italia?

Le nuove idee di prodotto e i prototipi sono progettati, sviluppati e prodotti da noi in azienda mentre tutti i componenti, ad eccezione del movimento che è svizzero, sono realizzati e prodotti in Italia da esperti artigiani, sotto la nostra direzione e costante supervisione.

Per chi ancora non vi dovesse conoscere, potrebbe indicarci i modelli G.A.W ad oggi realizzati?

Nel 2016 abbiamo presentato il nostro primo modello, il NumeroZero (cassa in acciaio AISI 316L o in titanio grado 5, 54,6mm x 19,5mm, quadrante sandwich, movimento automatico GAW001 su base ETA 2824/2, cinturino in caucciù high-tech). Attualmente NumeroZero è in stand-by per dare spazio alle nuove creazioni.

NumeroUno è il secondo modello G.A.W. (cassa in bronzo, 46mm x 16,5mm, quadrante sandwich, vetro zaffiro antiriflesso di 4mm, calibro automatico GAW001 Swiss Made, impermeabile fino ai 100 bar ed oltre (testato >200 bar), cinturino in cuoio o in canvas).

Il Kraken, il nostro terzo modello, con il suo look “spaziale” che strizza l’occhio agli Anni 70 e le sue peculiarità tecniche, è il nostro modello più estremo: cassa in titanio grado 5, 46 mm x 18,5 mm, quadrante sandwich, vetro zaffiro antiriflesso con curvatura DOME di 8,5 mm di spessore, calibro automatico GAW001 Swiss Made, 150 grammi di peso, cinturino in pelle di squalo o in caucciù high tech, impermeabilità in acqua superiore alla pressione di 950 bar (valore autolimitato).

Il modello Dandy (anno 2018) è invece per noi il giusto compromesso tra performance ed estetica (cassa in titanio grado 5,44 mm x 12,5 mm, calibro Swiss Made GAW001, quadrante blu soleil, vetro zaffiro antiriflesso con curvatura DOME di 3,5 mm di spessore, impermeabilità in acqua superiore alla pressione di 110 bar, valore autolimitato, cinturino racing in pelle saffiano).

Il 2020/21 è l’anno del modello Lince. Rispetto ai nostri precedenti orologi G.A.W., Lince presenta una cassa dalle dimensioni più compatte (42 mm x 12 mm). In questo modo può essere indossato anche da quelle donne che amano osare diametri di cassa più importanti dei canonici. La cassa, in titanio grado 5 conferisce leggerezza e robustezza allo stesso tempo ed è composta da 3 parti ottenute dal titanio in barra ed è assicurata con 10 viti a brugola (5 lato fondello e 5 sulla lunetta fissa). Il quadrante blu o nero, protetto da vetro zaffiro antiriflesso, presenta un effetto degradè con finiture realizzate a mano e lancette gladio e indici riempiti con Superluminova. La corona a vite è in titanio grado 5 e personalizzata.

L’impermeabilità del vetro è garantita da un O-ring sottovetro e da un anello ad L che lavora sul perimetro del vetro con la lunetta che ha il compito di assicurare il vetro contro la cassa. Queste caratteristiche tecniche permettono di garantire all’orologio un’impermeabilità in acqua superiore alla pressione di 100 bar (valore autolimitato). Pesa 85 grammi e monta il calibro automatico Swiss Made SELLITA SW200 (28.800 alternanze/h, funzioni di ore, minuti, secondi, datario, riserva di carica di 41 ore). Il fondello, inciso con referenza e seriale numerico, è in lega di titanio grado 5 con finitura micropallinata. Lince, offerto in una scatola in legno artigianale, è abbinato ad un cinturino in caucciù naturale con fibbia in acciaio. Colgo l’occasione per segnalare che dopo Ferragosto presenteremo il Lince nella nuova versione “turquoise”.

Per il secondo anno esporrete alla II edizione di W.O.I. – Watches Of Italy, la mostra-mercato nazionale dedicata alla Produzione Orologiera Italiana che si terrà sabato 25 e domenica 26 settembre 2021 presso il Museo delle Macchine Agricole “Orsi” a Tortona (ingresso gratuito, dalle h.10:00 alle h.19:00). Come proporrete di nuovo ai visitatori?

In occasione della prossima mostra W.O.I. presenteremo l’ultimo modello della nostra collezione: l’Esploratore (39mm x 12.8mm). Avrà una cassa inizialmente in bronzo Cusn12 e fondello in titanio grado 5. Monterà, una prima volta per un G.A.W, il movimento GMT ETA 2893/2. Con questo modello vogliamo avvicinare ancor di più alla nostra filosofia coloro che apprezzano gli orologi tecnici ma con dimensioni più contenute. L’aspetto tecnico/qualitativo rimane inalterato con performance garantite ed allineate agli altri nostri modelli. Sarà un nuovo progetto tutto da scoprire. Ovviamente anch’esso rigorosamente prodotto in Italia.
