The video of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner rehearsing for the Farnborough airshow went viral on the web, with a take-off that develops into a near-vertical climb, so steep that I was thinking, “they must have done that with CGI.” (See link below). The guys at Bremont will have been impressed, and happy. Bremont signed a partnership deal with Boeing in January 2014, when Jim Newcomb, Global Brand Management Director at Boeing, said”We have been impressed with Bremont’s commitment to aviation, engineering and quality. Developing a range of watches with the same super hardened steels, aerogels and composite materials found in Boeing aeroplanes is a unique way of celebrating the history of aviation as we approach our 2016 centennial.”
Bremont is a rare brand in watchmaking, in that it is British, with a commitment to performing all stages of production in the U.K. The value of those two words at the bottom of a mechanical watch, “Swiss made,” is so huge that it takes courage to take a different route. The new Boeing range was presented at Baselworld 2014, and it comprises two models, the Bremont Boeing Model 1, and the Bremont Boeing Model 247. Modell 1 is in the classic pilot’s watch aesthetic; the Model 247 is a chronograph. Both are in two versions, one in Custom 465 Stainless Steel, the other in Boeing aviation-grade titanium.
The Bremont Boeing Model 247 is named after the first Boeing twin-engined commercial aircraft, and a link to this inspiration is provided by the two sudials, small seconds and chronograph minutes. The dial is in two variants, black and silver; I am particularly impressed by the look of the silver dial version, with the contrast between black hands and bezel, black strap, and the silvery metal finish of the rest. The movement has a 42-hour power reserve; the Bremont rotor and parts of the movement can be viewed through the sapphire caseback. Date window at 4.30. The watch is water-resistant to 100 metres. The price of the watch in GBP is £4,495.
