It’s always a pleasure to see a mechanical watch for women, and even more so when it’s as good-looking as this. The new Metro collection by Tiffany & Co. is hallmarked by an asymmetric case, which determines the shape of the unique bracelet with a series of gracefully curved elements, designed to emphasize the space between the links when seen from the front. The watch itself has a lovely guilloché-patterned dial, and hour markers in baguette and brilliant-cut diamonds. The diamond on the crown has a unique serial number, and it echoes the Tiffany setting used for engagement rings. Apparently, recently in Japan, men have been giving a diamond watch to their fiancée as an engagement present instead of a ring. This watch fits this custom to perfection. The 34 mm versions of the watch are powered by a mechanical movement, and this again reflects Tiffany’s reading of the market. Even though the piece is principally about the diamonds on the dial, bezel and crown – as befits a company famous for its jewellery – the brand is convinced that women are becoming increasingly interested in mechanical movements. The model below is in stainless steel, with a 5 atm water resistance (on their website, Tiffany say that this corresponds to 100 metres depth of water), price €6,650.
Inspiration from Tiffany’s watchmaking history
The bracelet design is from Tiffany’s own jewellery archives, from a piece in an edition of their Blue Book catalogue. The asymmetric case was also inspired by an old watch, while the dial with the small seconds at 6 o’clock is from a 19th-century Patek Tiffany watch.
Specially-designed Soprod movement
The movement is made by Soprod, personalized with an attractive oscillating weight. It is self-winding and has a power reserve of 46 hours. In addition to the Tiffany rotor, Soprod modified one of their standard movements to provide the seconds counter at 6 o’clock.
Other versions have a gem-set bezel. The piece below has a pink dial, stainless steel case, steel crown set with a diamond, and the hour indices in bagette and brilliant-cut diamonds that are a hallmark of the collection. Price €10,600.
The watches are also available with blue alligator leather strap, beautifully profiled where it meets the case. The piece below is in stainless steel and costs €6,100.
Versions in pink gold have an alligator strap. The piece below costs €17,900.
The collection also includes a 28 mm version of the watch, with a quartz movement, pricing starting from €4,450 with alligator strap, €5,000 with stainless steel bracelet. Read more on the Tiffany website.
