Watches of Italy, a new show for Italian watchmaking

A fondo pagina, testo in italiano

The first edition of Watches of Italy is currently being held in the town of Tortona, a city midway between Milan and Genoa. It provides a fascinating overview of Italian watchmaking, presenting established brands, micro-brands and artisanal brands, demonstrating that watchmaking is alive and well in Italy and is creating a lot of pleasant surprises. In a year in which the major shows SIHH and Baselworld were cancelled due to Covid, there is even more space for events such as Watches of Italy.

Converted industrial venue

The show is held is a converted industrial space, the “Orsi” Museum of Agricultural Machinery, Via Emilia 446, 15057 Tortona (AL). It is open on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2020, from 10am to 7pm. Admission free. Free parking in the vicinity of the venue. Health protection is ensured by regulated and supervised entrance to avoid crowding inside. Refreshments are available on site with two street food trucks, and Tortona has many fantastic restaurants just a short walk away.

Attractive limited-edition products

There are about 50 exhibitors, creating a pleasant voyage of discovery. On the first day the show attracted a large number of people, mostly watch enthusiasts, and many were able to purchase watches direct at the show. A lot of the products were accessibly priced, and there were some very interesting timepieces present. They were made even more attractive to collectors for the fact that they were nearly always strongly limited series, 50 pieces or less, or even one-off pieces. In terms of overall themes, diving watches are a firm favourite, present in many variants but all featuring the practicality of waterproofness and robustness along with the unmistakable visual cue of the rotating bezel. Then pilot’s watches, sport chronographs, astronomical calendar watches, personalizable watches and more. I was surprised to see so many watchmakers from the Venice and Veneto region of Italy, virtually a new industrial cluster.

La protezione sanitaria è garantita all’ingresso regolato per evitare assembramenti all’interno.

  1. said by one of the participants, it was really a very interesting event. Being only the first edition, I am sure that this fair will quickly become a solid reference point for all small manufacturers, and for the watchmaking world in general.
